The 15th Annual Terryglass Arts Festival will be officially opened by Cllr. Ger Darcy, Mayor of North Tipperary County Council at 7.30pm on Wednesday next (14th August) in the Terryglass Festival Marquee.

Following the official opening there will be a special screening of the award winning film “Irish Folk Furniture” by internationally celebrated local film maker Tony Donoghue.

A large crowd is expected for Wednesday’s festival opening which continues with a special celebratory birthday concert at 8.30pm featuring young local musicians- singer/songwriter Riona O’Madagain and tenor Conor O’Meara.

After months of hard work, Festival Chairperson, Valerie Cotter is eagerly looking forward to the festival and has extended an invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening and the celebratory concert.

“The festival has received tremendous support and good will from our local community here in Terryglass and I would like to extend a warm invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening and music performance tonight,” said Ms. Cotter.

The headline act for this year’s festival is the Irish première of the exhibition “Travelling Circus” by Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. An extremely popular show for any age, these amazing kinetic sculptures, driven by electrical motors and controlled by sophisticated electro mechanical devices, present an eerily magical theatrical performance – whirring, clicking, buzzing and clanking into action to tell their story.

Music highlights include a rocking musical cabaret from the Bee-Loud Glade, four multi talented actors and musicians who perform famous and contemporary poetry to bouncing pop, driving rock and groovy jazz rhythms (9pm,The Derg Inn, Thursday 15th August). Slovakian violinist Vladimir Jablokov entertains with ‘Classical Twist’ – a unique, fresh hybrid of music old and new featuring superb virtuoso performance of favorites from Bach to Beatles and the Stones to Strauss (8pm,Terryglass Church, Friday 16th August).

In addition to the nightly entertainment, festival organisers have planned over 58 workshops which are guaranteed to provide fun and entertainment for all the family. From millinery designing to traditional woodturning, contemporary dance to African drumming and coderDojo there is something to entertain children of all ages! And lots for the adults too!

There’s more family entertainment at Terryglass Quay on Saturday night 17th August with performances from street artists Streetwise capped off by the traditional after dark monster fireworks display.

Sunday is Family Fun Day featuring an outdoor Craft and Food market, face painting, street theatre with Streetwise, Goldilocks and the Three Bears Puppet show with Miriam Lambert and much more. There’s non stop free musical entertainment all afternoon from 6 piece band Ebony followed by original, energetic gypsy blues and alternative folk music from the Calvinists.
